Portland Cement Association
Sustainable Leadership Awards

(For projects and activities from January 2007 through December 2008)

The Portland Cement Association is seeking nominations for the 2009 PCA Sustainable Leadership Awards. Each year, these Awards will honor government leaders who advance the concept and implementation of sustainable development in their communities through the use of concrete and other cement-based products. Awards will be granted in each of the following four areas:

  1. Leadership in Sustainability Policy – Honors government and public officials who enacted or embraced policies and programs to advance the concept and implementation of sustainable development in their communities through the use of concrete and other cement-based products.   2. Homes and Residential Building Projects – Honors government and public officials who utilize concrete and other cement-based products to build homes and residential buildings that are energy efficient and beneficial to the community. Concrete products might include, but are not limited to, wall systems such as insulated concrete forms, concrete masonry, cast-in-place or precast walls, pervious concrete floors, siding, roof tile, landscaping elements and stucco.   3. Non-Residential Building Projects – Honors government and public officials who utilize concrete and other cement-based products to build non-residential buildings that are energy efficient and beneficial to the community. Concrete products might include, but are not limited to, Wall or framing systems or concrete products for green roofs, landscaping, floors, etc. View a sample entry (PDF).
  4. Infrastructure Projects – Honors public officials who utilize concrete and other cement-based products in public works projects such as highways, streets, bridges, dams, pipe or water systems and more that are energy efficient and beneficial to the community. Products could include conventional concrete, full-depth reclamation with cement, roller compacted concrete, soil cement and any other cement- or concrete-based application. Nomination and Judging Process

All cement and concrete industry professionals may submit nominations, and each individual can submit up to three separate nominations. Each nomination must be submitted on a separate form.

Upload your nomination materials and images at www.cement.org/SustainableLeadership. Please use a Word document to describe the activities and features of your nominee’s policy leadership activities or construction project. Your submission should be uploaded to PCA no later than June 20, 2009.

Winners will be selected by a panel of Judges including PCA staff experts and cement and concrete industry leaders. Winners will be notified no later than July 27, 2009. Winning projects will be published on the PCA Web site. In the following months, PCA will begin a program to recognize the public officials chosen to be honored for their leadership.

All submissions must include:
  • Submitter's contact information, including, name, title, company, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and email address.
  • Nominee's contact information, including name, title, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and email address.
  • Submission Category (i.e. Leadership in Sustainability Policy, Homes and Residential Building, Non-Residential Building or Infrastructure).
  • Description of the nominee's policy leadership activities or construction project, utilizing the Award evaluation criteria listed below.
Use of Supporting Materials

Photographs, articles and information about other Awards the individual has won in the sustainability arena are encouraged. All supporting materials should be clearly marked with the name, location, the subject and date and any other relevant information. The text should also reference any associated photographs.

Individual Evaluation Criteria: Leadership in Sustainability Policy
  • Submissions must explain how the nominee's policies or actions promoted the use of concrete and/or other cement-based products to achieve the three tiers of sustainability: economic responsibility; environmental responsibility; and social responsibility.
  • Submissions must illustrate the beneficial outcomes or expected outcomes of the policies or actions.
  • Individuals will be honored for activities that took place between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008 in the United States.
Project Evaluation Criteria: Homes and Residential Building; Non-Residential Building; Infrastructure
  • Submission must illustrate how concrete or other cement-based products allowed the project to achieve the three tiers of sustainability: economic responsibility; environmental responsibility; and social responsibility.
  • Submission should describe the unique aspects of the project, for example, site-specific challenges that were overcome.
  • Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008, in the United States.
  • Submission must illustrate anticipated benefits to owners/clients/users and the community at large.

Concrete is the most widely used building material on earth and is truly the cornerstone of our economy and infrastructure. It provides the building materials for our homes, buildings, highways, sidewalks and more. Concrete also offers unrivaled sustainability benefits in terms of energy efficiency, durability and ability to be recycled.
