Manager, Building Structures

Lawrence Novak is PCA’s Manager of Building Structures. He and his staff are available to consult with engineers, architects, contractors, and owners on the use of concrete for buildings and other engineered structures throughout the United States and Canada. Novak also manages research and development projects, publishes books and guides to aid engineers in the design of concrete structures, and conducts technical seminars for engineers.

Novak has more than 20 years of experience as a structural engineer on high-rise, mid-rise and special use structures throughout the world, including seismic regions. Most recently as an Associate Partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, he served as the senior project engineer responsible for the structural design of the Burj Dubai Tower, the world’s tallest free-standing structure. Novak also was involved in the design of the 92 story Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago and the renowned Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

He has co-authored several papers on structural engineering and is the co-recipient of both the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois’ Meritorious Publication Award and the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations’ Outstanding Structural Engineering Publication Award for 2001 and is a co-recipient of the United Kingdom’s Oscar Faber Award for 2002. Novak received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Novak serves on several technical structural committees and is an active member of the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. In addition to being a Licensed Structural Engineer, Mr. Novak is a LEED® Accredited Professional and a Certified Structural Peer Reviewer.
