Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures, 7th Edition
Item Code: EB101
Date: 2002
Kosmatka, S. H., Kerkhoff, B., Panarese, W. C., and others

Description: Seventh edition. Provides a concise reference on concrete and includes new advances in concrete technology. Also gives practical guidelines for selection of materials, including portland cements, supplementary cementing materials, admixtures, fibers; design of concrete mixtures; and control of manufacturing and construction practices, including mixing, transporting, placing, finishing and curing of quality concrete. Throughout the text, Canadian Standards Association standards and test methods are used. CSA standards used reflect the latest editions of applicable Canadian material and test standards, namely CAN/CSA-A23.1-00 and CAN/CSA-A23.2-00.

This reference on concrete technology covers fundamentals and detailed information on freshly mixed and hardened concrete. Topics include portland cement manufacture, types (including blended hydraulic cements), and chemical composition. Cement fineness, soundness, setting time, compressive strength, and heat of hydration are also covered. Describes recognized supplementary cementing materials: pozzolans, granulated slags, and silica fume. Pozzolans include fly ash and natural pozzolans. Gives tolerable impurity levels in mixing water. Discusses coarse- and fine-aggregate grading, shape and surface texture, unit weight, specific gravity, absorption, freeze-thaw resistance, abrasion resistance, alkali reactivity, and thermal properties. Properties of air-entrained concrete and factors affecting air content. Effects of air-entraining agents, water-reducers, retarders, accelerators, superplasticizers, and other admixtures. Sections on proportioning from field data and trial mixtures give numerical examples. Effects of water-cementing materials ratio, cement content, and air content are illustrated. Production topics include batching, mixing, transporting, and handling. Construction topics include forms, placing, vibration, finishing, jointing, and curing. Hot-weather and cold-weather concreting, including effects of temperature extremes on concrete properties. Volume changes caused by loads or by temperature or moisture content variations. Describes tests for slump, air content, temperature, and density of fresh concrete, plus strength, durability, and permeability of hardened concrete. Nondestructive tests are also described. Many properties of high-performance concretes are mentioned; strength and durability are covered in detail. Self-compacting concrete, reactive powder concrete and special types of concrete are discussed. Standards from both Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) are included and cross referenced. Eighteen chapters and a comprehensive index.
