Description: The use of lightweight concrete provides structural efficiency and economic advantages. Well documented performance over a period of decades has demonstrated that lightweight concrete can be used reliably in most concrete applications. This information sheet provides a brief history of the use of lightweight concrete in addition to the properties (aggregate characteristics, density, compressive strength, fire resistance, durability, and the interfacial transition zone), mixture proportioning (absolute volume method, volumetric method, cementitious materials content, w/cm ratio, and air entrainment), design/construction considerations (prewetting aggregates, pumping, internal curing, and communication), and specifications.
