Quality Assurance for Masonry Mortar
Item Code: IS279
Date: 1995
Portland Cement Association

Description: Learn how to develop an effective quality assurance program for masonry mortar. Covers basic concepts of a quality assurance program and relates these to mortar materials, specifications, and tests. Explains the roles of submittals, testing, and inspection.

No construction project can be considered a success unless the owner's quality objectives have been met upon completion. The quality assurance program provides an outline of policies and requirements intended to assure that these objectives are realized. While the general provisions for such a program are usually fairly well defined within contract documents, quality assurance for specific narrowscope components such as masonry mortar is often either omitted or inadequately defined. Misunderstanding of the role of mortar materials, related specifications, and test procedures is often the reason that a mortar quality assurance program is incapable of fulfilling its purpose. This document examines some basic concepts related to quality assurance, mortar materials, specifications, and tests and provides guidelines on implementing an effective quality assurance program for masonry mortar.
