Description: This guide was developed for architects, engineers, and contractors who are involved with the design and construction of single-story concrete masonry residential structures in high-wind areas. It provides prescriptive design alternatives to engineered designs for concrete masonry buildings for design wind speeds of 90, 100 and 110 MPH (fastest mile). The guide's prescriptive design and construction provisions are based on the wind load requirements of the 1997 and 1999 editions of the Standard Building Code, and comply with the codes' masonry design requirements (i.e., ACI 530, Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures). The provisions of the guide are intended to assure structural stability against wind and do not consider seismic loads or flood loads. The guide was developed by the Florida Concrete and Products Association with support from the National Concrete Masonry Association and Portland Cement Association.
