High-end Residential Development Showcases Road Reconstruction
Item Code: RP276
Date: 2006
Udelhofen, G.

Description: Reprint of an article from Asphalt Contractor, April/May 2006, describing the use of full-depth reclamation (FDR) to reconstruct a 1.5 mile entrance road for a new residential development outside Charlotte, NC. Improvements included widening the road with an additional 15-ft-wide lane and 1-ft-wide shoulder. The new lane was constructed using an 8-in plant-mixed cement-treated base, designed to eliminate the possibility of differential settlement. The FDR work consisted of mixing 40 pounds of Portland cement per square yard to a depth of ten-inches. As a result of using FDR on the existing asphalt roadway rather than patching distressed segments of pavement and closing the road to traffic during construction, the project was completed in 75 days rather than the 150 original construction days specified in the contract. The cost of reclamation and a new HMA overlay produced a 21 percent savings over the original proposal to patch and overlay. The article includes a description of the project, equipment, and the many benefits of FDR. Sold in packs of 25.
