Concrete is Winning Entry in ARC Competition
The ARC International Wildlife Crossing Infrastructure Design Competition
has announced its winning entry, and that entry employs concrete.
HNTB Engineering with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc.
won the competition with their creation of “hypar nature.”
The competition asked designers to create a wildlife overpass for
West Vail Pass on I-70 in Colorado. Thirty-six teams submitted
their ideas for conveying wildlife, including wolves and lynx,
over I-70. The field was narrowed to five finalists, and these
five teams were taken to Colorado to see the West Vail Pass. All
five teams then submitted their final designs and the winning entry
was selected.

The HNTB team’s design involved precast concrete modules
cast in a hyperbolic parabaloid (or “hypar”) shape.
One module is placed on each side of the roadway and then connected
at midspan. These shapes serve as abutment, beam, and deck, and
are efficient, cost-effective, and easy to transport and construct.
