Paul LilesSeven Questions for Paul Liles, Georgia DOT

1. What are your current position and job activities?

My current position is Assistant Division Director of Engineering for the Georgia Department of Transportation. My job activities are to represent Georgia on the AASHTO Bridge Committee and to advise the Department on structural issues.

2. Where else have you worked?

Except for two years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army,
my whole career has been with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

3. Where did you go to school and why?

I went to school at Georgia Tech. I mostly went because I liked the science and mathematical aspects that they taught in school.

4. What sparked your interest to become an engineer?

I greatly enjoyed seeing things being constructed and the design aspects of the
work were very similar to what we studied in school.

5. What do you think is the biggest challenge facing bridges/bridge engineering today?

There are many challenges but for right now our biggest challenge is our aging infrastructure and the lack of funding to do much about it.

6. What do you consider to be your biggest achievement or contribution?

The training and interaction with our younger engineers.

7. What is your favorite concrete bridge (in your state)?

There are many favorites, but I would probably have to pick the Sidney Lanier Bridge. It is our large cable-stayed bridge located along the Atlantic Coast in Brunswick, Georgia.
