Bridge Design Seminar for University Professors
August 7-8, 2008, Skokie, IL

The Portland Cement Association will host the tenth annual Bridge Professors’ Seminar on August 7-8, 2008, at it’s headquarters in Skokie, Illinois. The focus of this seminar is on the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications including the latest revisions. Emphasis will be placed on the unified method of design for reinforced and prestressed concrete, shear design utilizing modified compression field theory, and strut-and-tie modeling. Examples for deck design, pier cap design, and precast/prestressed concrete girder design will help illustrate application of the provisions.

Since October 2007, all new bridges receiving federal funding must be designed by the AASHTO LFRD Bridge Design Specifications. The goal of the seminar is to facilitate enhancing concrete curriculum by providing educators with up-to-date resources on the LRFD design of concrete bridges. Forums and open discussions will enable participants to compare notes on successful methods of teaching bridge design.

Each professor receives a facsimile of all slides, design examples, and a CD-ROM containing PowerPoint files of presentations. These materials are provided to the participants to facilitate starting a new concrete bridge design course, or improving on an existing one. There is no seminar registration fee. The seminar is open to full-time faculty from Canadian and U.S. universities.

In order to maintain a proper educational setting and to provide for meaningful interchange of ideas, attendance is limited to 32 professors on a first come, first served basis.

The local concrete industry groups—US Regional Cement Promotion Groups, Cement Association of Canada Regions, State Ready Mixed Concrete Associations, CRSI Chapters, ACPA State Associations, and PCI Regional and State Associations—provide funding for travel and hotel expenses. Professors are usually reimbursed for all of their travel expenses. Sometimes budget may allow only partial reimbursement of expenses. That is why professors interested in this seminar should consider applying ASAP.

To sign-up for the 2008 seminar or for additional information, please contact Caron Johnsen at PCA, 5420 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL 60077, (847) 972-9058, cjohnsen@cement.org.
