At the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Technical
Conference on the Federal Buildings and Fire Safety Investigation
of the World Trade Center Disaster, Gaithersburg, MD, September,
13-15, 2005, PCA provided comments on NIST recommendations for design
and construction of buildings more than 20 stories in height.
PCA recommended the following in addition to other comments:
- Conduct tests on passive fire protection materials to
verify that the materials will not be damaged from normal use.
- Revert back to the older model code requirements which
did not allow reduced fire ratings for sprinklered buildings.
- Design buildings for enhanced structural integrity (as
required by ASCE -7 and ACI 318).
- Design buildings to prevent collapse during or after total
burnout.
