PCA Comments at NIST WTC Conference
Buildings Home > Codes and Standards > PCA Comments at NIST WTC Conference

At the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Technical Conference on the Federal Buildings and Fire Safety Investigation of the World Trade Center Disaster, Gaithersburg, MD, September, 13-15, 2005, PCA provided comments on NIST recommendations for design and construction of buildings more than 20 stories in height.

PCA recommended the following in addition to other comments:

  • Conduct tests on passive fire protection materials to verify that the materials will not be damaged from normal use.
  • Revert back to the older model code requirements which did not allow reduced fire ratings for sprinklered buildings.
  • Design buildings for enhanced structural integrity (as required by ASCE -7 and ACI 318).
  • Design buildings to prevent collapse during or after total burnout.
