Case Studies
Des Moines Public Library
Des Moines, Iowa

More than a shelter for books, this $32 million, 140,000 square foot project acts as a community centre with a wide range of educational services and houses a conference centre, extensive youth and children’s facilities and commercial space.

National Museum of the American Indian
Washington, D.C.

Located in the National Mall in Washington D.C., the $200-million National Museum of the American Indian opened to the public on September 21, 2004. The 210,000 square foot, five-story museum, expected to be the last Smithsonian facility built in Washington, D.C., evokes nature with its stone cladding façade intended to resemble a solid piece of weathered rock.

Jacksonville Public Library
Jacksonville, Florida

Located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, this new $95 million building will provide the city with a “classically inspired”, highly efficient state of the art facility accommodating the city’s evolving cultural and civic needs. The building consists of 5 floors and contains over 320,000 square feet of space.

Leo Kolligian Library
University of California Merced

The first all-new campus in the University of California system since the late 1960s, UC Merced opened its doors to students for its first academic year in September 2005. The Leo Kolligian Library, a $37-million, concrete-frame structure, is the first building on campus and is set to be the new university’s flagship building.

Santa Monica Main Public Library
Santa Monica, California

The new library is a 109,000 square feet, two-level, above-grade structure built of cast-in-place and precast concrete elements over a 250,000 square feet three level subterranean parking structure with space for 530 cars. It is a classic design-build project with a modern twist—the project is striving for LEED® Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

de Young Museum
San Francisco, California

One of the first “Green Building” projects in San Francisco utilizing high volume fly ash mixes, the building used 15,000 cubic yards of concrete. The project is innovative in design elements, construction materials, and techniques.

Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater
Costa Mesa, California

Adjacent to the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, Calif., the $200-million complex includes the 2,000-seat Rene and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and the 500-seat Samueli Theater.

American Folk Art Museum
New York, N.Y.

The goals of the project were to provide open spaces with natural light on a constrained site and to create an image for a small museum in the shadow of the larger Museum of Modern Art.
