Engineering Today’s Play into Tomorrow’s
Careers
To celebrate National Engineers’ Week, the annual DuPage
Area Engineers Week Expo was held on February 20, 2010 at the Illinois
Institute of Technology and attended by more than 1,200 students
and parents. The Engineers Week events provide students the opportunity
to experience and explore the many fields of engineering through
a series of interactive displays and presentations.

At
the Engineering Expo, PCA Director of Engineered Buildings, Larry
Novak, presented "High-rise Building Design: Shake, Rattle
& Roll!” This high energy interactive and educational
program included presentations on the Burj Dubai Tower, the world’s
tallest structure, and the Trump Tower, Chicago. Topics such as
structural materials, and sustainability were discussed.
Demonstrations included breaking concrete beams and wind tunnel
testing. A hands-on shake table allowed students to construct their
own LEGO building designs and test them to destruction under earthquake
conditions. Prizes were awarded to the students who constructed
the most “earthquake resistant structures.”
