Purpose
The Portland Cement Association, is developing its first consensus standard as an accredited American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards writing organization. The new PCA Standard on Prescriptive Design and Construction Requirements for Concrete Walls is intended to be applicable for cast-in-place concrete walls for one- and two-family dwellings.
This standard development activity began by considering the prescriptive requirements developed jointly by the National Association of Home Builders National Research Center, US Department of Housing and Urban Development and PCA. The provisions are currently part of the International Code Council’s International Residential Code (IRC), and referenced in the National Fire Protection Association’s Building Construction and Safety Code (NFPA 5000).
This effort will have balance in accordance with the requirements of the PCA’s procedures. Balance is such that no one group (producers, users, and general interest) dominates the process. Concrete forming system manufacturers, concrete producers, cement producers, admixture producers, and consultants to such groups are classified as producers. Design professionals (architects, engineers, specifiers involved in the design one- and two-family dwellings) builders, developers, etc. are typically classified as users; and government representatives, including building officials and other regulators, academics, researchers, etc. are typically classified as general interest.
Membership
Participation in the standards development process is strictly voluntary. Members provide for their own transportation and related expenses, and volunteer their time. Most of the activities for standard development will likely be handled via e-mail and conference calls.
