Ramping Up RCC Placement
at Hickory Log
Hickory Log Creek Dam in Canton, Ga.,
is rapidly taking shape. During the first few days of roller-compacted
concrete placement in December 2006, trucks hauled the RCC from
the on-site mixing plant. In January, the installation of a
2,500-foot-long conveying system increased the daily rate of
RCC placement to 2,500 cubic yards.
The
conveying system is now being used to carry the RCC directly
from the plant to the point of placement. The general contractor,
Thalle Construction, teamed up with ASI RCC, Inc., to build
the dam. Engineer is Schnabel Engineering. RCC placement should
reach more than 4,000 cubic yards per day once work around the
gallery is complete.
Precast concrete panels with fully adhered
waterproofing membrane will be used for upstream facing of
the RCC dam. The project is expected to use 17,000 tons of
cement; RCC placement should be completed by the end of April
2007.
At its completed height of 180 feet and span of 980 feet,
Hickory Log Creek Dam will be the highest non-federal dam
in the state of Georgia. It will form a 411-acre lake to supply
44 million gallons of water per day to the City of Canton
and Cobb County. Project funding of $30 million to $40 million
is shared by the City of Canton and Cobb County-Marietta Water
Authority.
PCA will conduct a seminar and site tour of the project in
April. (See below.)

Stadium Tour,
Tailgate Party Featured at Phoenix Meetings
PCA's Spring Committee Meetings will feature
a tailgate buffet and tour of the University of Phoenix Stadium,
new home of the Arizona Cardinals, on Tuesday, February 27.
At lunch on Tuesday, Brent Leif, design manager of Hunt Construction,
will present an overview of the design and construction of
the stadium.
Business Week called the $455-million new home of
the Arizona Cardinals one of the ten most impressive stadiums
in the world. It's the first National Football League stadium
to feature an operable, rail-mounted playing field built on
a concrete tray. The field can be rolled outdoors, converting
the stadium into a 152,000-square-foot exterior venue for
concerts, trade shows, and special events.
PCA's Spring Committee Meetings are scheduled
for February 26-28, 2007, at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix.

Solidification/Stabilization
Project Featured in Military Engineer
The Military Engineer magazine featured
the cement-based solidification and stabilization (S/S) treatment
of the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Miss.,
in its January/February 2007 issue.
The center used S/S to treat soil contaminated with Agent Orange,
which was stored at the base from 1968 to 1977. Approximately
850,000 gallons of the herbicide were stored on a 30-acre area
of the base in 55-gallon drums. Spills and leaks of the herbicide
migrated from the storage area and contaminated a network of
drainage ditches and wetlands on and off the base.
Nearly 75,000 tons of contaminated soil was removed and transported,
then treated with cement. Once complete, the area was capped
with roller-compacted concrete pavement for use as a parking
lot for heavy equipment. Contact

Concrete Bridges
Showcased at TRB PCA helped keep
concrete at the forefront of the recent 86th Annual Meeting
of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C. In
cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, PCA's Basile
Rabbat and Shri Bhidé presented a workshop, "Load
Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of Concrete Bridge Superstructures,"
attended by approximately 50 engineers. PCA also organized and
presided over two technical sessions in which eight papers on
the design and performance of concrete bridges were presented.

North American Italcementi Group
Launches Mobile Lab at World of Concrete
At the recent World of Concrete trade show
in Las Vegas, ESSROC Cement Corp. and admixture supplier AXIM
Concrete Technologies, both North American subsidiaries of the
Italcementi Group, launched a mobile laboratory designed to
provide onsite technical support.
The Axsis Mobile Tech Unit is a 52-foot tractor/trailer equipped
to perform tests on materials such as chemical admixtures, aggregates,
cements, fillers, mineral admixtures and cement/admixture compatibility,
as well as applications in concrete and masonry.
The lab will serve as the backdrop for comprehensive education
programs not only for concrete
producers and contractors, but for designers as well.

Promoters Bring Concrete Home: The Connecticut Concrete
Promotion Council (CCPC), the Hartford Area Home Builders Association,
and ICF distributor Polysteel Northeast are teaming up to construct
an ICF show home inside the Connecticut Convention Center during
this spring’s home show in Hartford. The
1,300-square-foot home will be erected during a 4-day period
just prior to the Home Show, and will serve as an educational
venue for the thousands of expected visitors. In addition
to ICF exterior walls (minus concrete), which will be left
partially uncovered, the home will also feature a decorative
concrete driveway and front walk. Seminars addressing a variety
of ICF and concrete topics will be held throughout the 3-day
event, which takes place March 2-4.
The promotional partners are conducting
an intensive advertising campaign around the construction
of the ICF show home, including ads on 60 Hartford city buses,
a one-hour guest appearance on a radio home improvement show,
print ads in local newspapers, and several weeks of radio
and television commercials.
