Salt Lake City Launches $1.5-Billion Downtown Redevelopment
Downtown Rising, a masterplan for downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, hopes to harmonize retail, office, and residential development with open spaces and pedestrian -friendly access.

The heart of the redevelopment plan is a 5-year, $1.5 billion project called City Creek Center that will span 20 acres.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is developing the property through its commercial real estate arm, Property Reserve, Inc. Completion is scheduled for 2011. Demolition is slated to begin this month, followed by a year of excavation and site preparation.

According to a press release from the Church, City Creek Center will include:
  • Up to three national department stores
  • Both new and refurbished office towers
  • 2000 new residential units
  • The reopening or extension of historic downtown streets as pedestrian walkways
  • Fountains and man-made streams to represent the historic South Fork of City Creek supplemented by approximately six acres of gardens and open space
  • Underground parking for 5,600 vehicles

PCA and the Rocky Mountain Cement Council have stepped up promotional efforts with several presentations in the last few months in the area, as the masterplan includes several projects with significant concrete potential.

ACI Nears Completion of New Provisions for Fire Resistance of High-Strength Concrete Columns
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is close to publishing the first standard containing provisions for the fire resistance rating of high-strength concrete columns. These provisions will provide confidence and guidance for designers opting to use such high-strength columns—information that has never before been published in any standards in the United States.

Meeting earlier this month in Denver, Colo., as part of the ACI fall convention, the American Concrete Institute/The Masonry Society Committee (ACI/TMS) 216 on Fire Resistance and Fire Protection of Structures responded to public comments and reported them to ACI’s Technical Activities Committee (TAC), the final step before publication.

Following TAC review of the committee responses, the publication should be published in the spring of 2007. While most of the information in the standard remains relatively unchanged since the last edition in 1997, this will be the first edition of ACI 216 to contain provisions for the fire resistance rating of concrete columns having a design compressive strength in excess of 12,000 psi.

Sustainability, Thermal Performance
Subjects of Fall ACI Sessions

American Concrete Institute Committee 122 on Thermal Properties and Performance of Concrete and Masonry Systems has scheduled a program for the fall of 2007 to address the developments in thermal performance of concrete and masonry systems.

The session is intended to focus on 1) the importance of the energy performance during the life a building, which may be 85% to 95% of the total life cycle impact relative to sustainability; and 2) innovative ways to obtain optimal thermal performance of concrete and masonry building elements.

While the sessions are primarily to communicate industry advances and the importance of thermal performance of concrete and masonry systems in building design, the committee expects to gain information for the development of a revised guide and possibly a standard for determining the thermal properties ands performance of concrete and masonry construction.

Myths Debunked at 2007 WOC
Michelle Wilson, PCA's manager of education and product development, will present a new seminar, “How Today’s Cements Affect Concrete Properties,” at the 2007 World of Concrete in Las Vegas. The seminar will discuss the different properties and applications of various cements as well as address issues of availability and demand. It will be offered Tuesday, January 23, 8-11 a.m.

Wilson will also lead “Top 10 Myths in Concrete Construction.” This seminar provides a revealing look at ten popular but mistaken ideas that still exist in concrete construction and is based on a PCA educational DVD. Wilson will guide attendees through a point-by-point discussion on how to do the job right the first time and increase customer satisfaction. The seminar will be Wednesday, January 24, at 3-4:30 p.m.

FDR in S.C. More than 80 people attended an open house in South Carolina last month to demonstrate the use of Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) with cement to stabilize unpaved roads in Fairfield County, S. C. This 13-mile project is the county’s first experience with FDR and they are now interested in an annual program to eventually complete 200 miles of their unpaved road system. The open house was sponsored by the Southeast Cement Association, Site-Prep, Inc., Transportation Technology Transfer Service of Clemson University, Fairfield County, and Dennis Corporation (engineering firm).

NRMCA Continues Storm Seminar Series:
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) has added two dates for the Storm Resistant Concrete Homes and Buildings regional seminar series. New seminars are scheduled for February 15 in Omaha, Neb., and February 28 in Virginia Beach, Va. Topics covered include wind-resistant construction methods, building code requirements for high winds, safe rooms and storm shelters, concrete masonry, tilt-up concrete, removable forms and insulating concrete forms. Attendees receive 7 Professional Development Hours. Members of the American Institute of Architects receive 7 Health Safety and Welfare Learning Units.

NYC Panel to Discuss Concrete Floor Systems: PCA regional engineering manager Mike Mota will lead a panel discussion in New York on cast-in-place concrete floor panels. Already being used throughout the country, New York engineers and builders are now starting to embrace this technology. The panel will include engineers and builders familiar with the system and its benefits. The discussion will take place November 30, 8:30-11:30 a.m., at the New York Athletic Club, New York City.

Results from Last Week:
Energy Top Priority for Green Building

Last week, construction professionals gathered in Denver for Greenbuild, the annual trade show of the U.S. Green Building Council. What should be the top priority for sustainable development or green building?
No. of respondents (percent)

  • Energy efficiency 28 (40.58%)
  • Durability and resource efficiency 24 (34.78%)
  • Ability to be recycled and to incorporate recycled materials 13 (18.84%)
  • Efficient water use 4 (5.80%)

Notable Comments

"Green building needs to consider true life cycle resource efficiency, accounting for energy consumption, water use, and durability."

"Pervious concrete represents the easiest "sell to expand concrete markets as it can represent a net cost savings to the owner on initial cost. Long-term performance and durability is a close second with life cycle cost modeling."

"Energy efficiency has the largest potential of overall savings in the life cycle cost of the green building movement."

"We need to be mindful of our resource usage, regardless it it's water, energy, materials, etc."
