Georgia Concrete Industry Recognizes Georgia's Speaker of the House David Ralston

GA-Awards-FramedGeorgia’s concrete industry recently honored Georgia Speaker of the House David Ralston in recognition of his many accomplishments this year, including passage of a transportation funding bill that is touted to be the best in the country.

The bill doubles Georgia’s state motor fuel collections to a value of more than $1 billion. Ralston said the collections, which began in July, are above projections and he expects the Georgia Department of Transportation to start expediting projects.

The luncheon on November 18 was hosted by Troutman Sanders Strategies, a full service government relations management firm. Leaders of many industries including insurance, utility, transportation, and concrete attended.

Roger Faulkner, PE, executive director of PCA-SE, and Steve Davis, executive director of the Georgia Concrete Paving Association, represented the Georgia Concrete Political Action Committee.

CEMEX USA Cement Plants Earn Conservation Certification

CEMEX_wildlife_framedCEMEX USA recently announced that seven of its cement plants earned Conservation Certification with the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) for conservation education programs, superior management of wildlife enhancement and land stewardship projects.

Cement plants in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas were recognized. In total, 14 CEMEX facilities have Wildlife Habitat Council certified programs. Each varies in scope, ranging from large-scale prairie and wetland restoration to individual species management and native planting projects.

The WHC promotes and certifies habitat conservation and management on corporate lands through partnership education.

“CEMEX USA is honored to receive certification through the Wildlife Habitat Council for the continued success of our environmental efforts,” said Karl H. Watson, Jr., president of CEMEX USA. “CEMEX’s partnership with this organization provides a valuable opportunity to engage our team and our community in wildlife enhancement and land stewardship initiatives, while fostering awareness of how industry and natural habitats can coexist.”

Cement Segments Show Mixed Growth in Second Quarter

Cement_Market_Dynamics_113015_FramedGrowth among end-use cement segments was mixed as 10 of the 18 segments tracked recorded volume gains in the second quarter, according to the latest PCA Survey of Portland Cement Consumption by User Group.

Nontraditional paving (soil cement, roller-compacted concrete, and full-depth reclamation) – a segment in the forefront of PCA’s promotional efforts – jumped 29 percent in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2014, resulting in a 39 percent year-to-date increase. Other markets outperforming overall cement consumption this year include pre-stressed concrete with a 22 percent gain and fiber cement siding with a 20 percent increase.

Oil and gas well drilling volumes fell 55 percent in the second quarter. Year-to-date volumes now stand at negative 31 percent, reflecting the sharp decline in oil prices and rig activity.

The awards honor projects that use site-cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology, and provide unique solutions to building programs.

Forty-two projects were recognized at the Tilt-Up Awards Gala at the TCA International Convention in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Projects were reviewed by a panel of judges, representing the TCA membership, educational institutions, media and other industry associations. Awards were presented in the following categories: Civic, Educational, Manufacturing/Industrial, Municipal, Office, Retail, Special, Spiritual, Unbuilt, and Warehouse/Distribution.
