Retaining Wall Systems
Concrete Home > Building Systems > Retaining Wall Systems

Retaining walls are ideal for residential projects. Just like concrete homes, these walls are built to last. The wall units display a natural texture that compliment any landscape and are environmentally safe, because they are made of concrete. There is minimal maintenance to retaining wall systems and they have a durable, long life. Some retaining walls require mortar, others do not.

Versatility
The design of your retaining walls is only bound by your imagination. There are many different shapes, textures and colors. You can build your wall 4 feet high, or do a simple 1 foot high wall to house your garden. Various facings include smooth-faced and rock-faced, and facings come in many different colors. Custom colors and blends are usually available to any designer or builder who wishes to adapt to specific tones.

Style
A tiered retaining wall system is a series of two or more stacked walls, each higher wall set back from the underlying wall. When designed properly, they not only retain soil and support loads, they also provide aesthetic treatments. Tiered walls are often more difficult to estimate and design than conventional, single walls. Providing proper drainage is especially important when building tiers because any drainage problem in the upper wall or walls can compound in the lower walls.

There are different ways to design tiered walls. There is the conventional
wall (top left), alternative wall (top right) and multi-tiered, or
terraced walls (bottom).

*Note: When doing terraced walls in seismic zones, on sloping hillsides, or sites near water, consult a qualified engineer.

Whether it's for a small garden, hillside or waterfront application, retaining wall systems can add grace and dignity to any property.
