Logansport

This custom designed home, located north of Logansport, in north central Indiana, is a 2,876 sq. ft, 3-bedroom home, with a 1,092 sq. ft. 3-car attached garage, located on a 13-acre site. The home is built entirely of concrete, using a combination of cast-in-place concrete, concrete masonry and precast concrete. The project also included 6,000 sq. ft. of exterior concrete drives and patio.

An airtight concrete structure with rigid foam insulation, with no attic or crawlspace, provides a tight, contained, high R-value envelope.

The first consideration was to emphasize the natural beauty of the site and to build a home that “fit” the site, with low, horizontal lines and a layout that would not disturb the original topography. There was also a focus on high quality, something different, and an energy-efficient design with a long, zero-maintenance life expectancy.

Architectural features include exposed concrete ceilings, decoratively stained concrete floors, cast-in-place structural beams and a cantilevered precast roof deck to provide wide exterior eaves. Custom molds were designed and crafted for the exterior surface of the cast-in-place bond beams to provide beautiful nature scenes that surround the house.

The house will be open to the public from 10:00am to 5:00pm, every Saturday and Sunday from June 22nd to August 11th. There is no admission fee, but a $5 suggested donation benefits "Home-Aid Chicago", a non-profit organization that provides housing for the transitionally homeless.

The home is designed for passive solar heat, with the cantilevered beams and roof deck calculated to shade the large south window openings in the summer, but to provide full sun during the winter heating season. The solar heat is supplemented with an in-floor, hot water, radiant heat system and a wood burning stove. The concrete mass is a key component, serving as a “heat sink” that helps maintain comfortable temperatures without large daily fluctuation in the heat or cooling loads. Exposed concrete floors absorb and store solar heat, and the concrete floor, hearth and ceilings store heat from the wood burning stove. The radiant in-floor system provides circulation to maintain even heat throughout the home.

“Green” construction was a key concern, in terms of energy efficiency, and in the selection of materials used in construction. All structural elements are produced from local indigenous materials, including the cement and aggregate used for the ready-mixed, precast and masonry concrete.

McCutchanville

In August 2004, construction started on The 2005 Idea Home, a 10,000+ sq. ft. ICF home. The home is located on 3 acres in Eagle Ridge Estates, just north of Evansville. The lower walk-out level has a concrete floor, and the main floor is a suspended concrete floor over the Hambro open web joist support system. Both the lower level and main floors have radiant floor heat. The pool will also be built with ICFs. There is an estimated 900+ cubic yards of concrete that will go into the house by completion.

This home has been featured in Evansville Living Magazine. It will be available for tour during the month of September 2005. Tour tickets will be sold to support a local charity. Local suppliers, craftsman and interior decorators will be putting their products in The 2005 Idea Home. Representatives from these companies will be available during the tour to answer questions.

It is truly going to be an energy efficient home. Energy Wise Structures (of Texas) has estimated that the heating and cooling bills will run about $348 a month. The local energy company, Vectren Energy, is sponsoring the home.
