Concrete Homebuilding making gains in Kansas

The awareness and use of concrete homebuilding in Kansas continues to grow at a rapid pace. Many of the concrete homes built in the state are constructed with insulating concrete forms (ICFs). Since Kansas is in the heart of "Tornado Alley", the documented wind resistance of ICF homes strongly appeals to potential homebuyers.

Kansas City

There's No Place Like (A Concrete) Home

If the old farm house in the movie The Wizard of Oz was built like the New Century Heartland Home, Dorothy would never have left Kansas. That's because the home, located in the prestigious Cedar Creek Community of Olathe, Kansas, was built using tornado resistant concrete walls. Ambassador Construction built the home using the Blue Maxx insulating concrete form (ICF) system and more than 5,000 people saw just how beautiful a concrete home can be during a recent three-week open house. The 4,700 square foot home sold on the first day of tours for $805,000.

5,000 consumers toured the New Century Heartland Home in Olathe, Kansas.

The show home was sponsored by Ash Grove Cement Company to showcase the benefits of concrete construction to local homebuilders and consumers. A comprehensive promotional program included builder demonstrations, a reception for real estate agents, and an advertising campaign. The Portland Cement Association co-funded the advertising campaign through its consumer co-op advertising program.

"Using ICF construction allows builders to provide homeowners with significant improvements in the areas of energy efficiency, resistance to wind storms and pests as well as quietness and solitude," said Charles Sunderland, vice president of administration of Ash Grove Cement. "All these benefits are wrapped up in one complete package, without sacrifice in the look and appeal of the final product."

Wichita

On May 3rd, 1999, a series of tornados devastated Oklahoma City before moving into Kansas and causing widespread damage to the Wichita-Haysville areas. As a response to this natural disaster the Wichita Area Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) Task Force was formed. The goal of the group is to educate contractors, realtors, bankers, insurance representatives and consumers about the safety benefits of building an ICF home. The group has already sponsored several seminars and training sessions and has plans to do similar events in the future.

For information specifically about the Task Force and its activities, contact Eric Trytten of Ash Grove Cement Co. at (316) 250-5400.

Salina

The Daryl Bixby Construction company is constructing 12 ICF duplexes in Salina using the Blue Maxx system. The duplexes will be made available for tours and are being advertised to potential homebuyers in North Central Kansas. The duplexes are each approximately 1,400 square feet in size.
