Monson

West Warren

East Hampton

Rather than build a traditional wood-framed house, this homeowner has opted for a pea-stone concrete mix (about 55 yards), which is pumped into steel reinforced foam blocks stacked like building blocks from the ground up. In other words, the walls of his home are made of concrete.

ICFs, popular in other parts of the country and in Canada, are designed to provide excellent insulation, no air infiltration and sound-deadening qualities. What's more, ICF is enormously energy efficient and can withstand winds of up to 200 mph. "It's kind of like walking into a sound-proof room," the homeowner said. "It's just an all-together different feel." The design can be more costly than a wood-framed building, but there are some cost-saving features. Richard Demetrius, of ICF Systems of Massachusetts Building Products Inc in Brimfield, says some people have saved 50 to 80 percent on energy bills.

Monson

This home is a 2,331 sq. ft. ranch with a wrap around porch. It is designed as a passive solar home with a lot of south facing glass. The home features an open floor plan with a central hearth and three bedrooms, one that can be used as a den/study. Selected windows are double glazed, argon filled with a high solar heat gain co-efficient. The home has a standing seam metal roof. The homeowners will have compact florescent bulbs and energy star rated appliances.

The homeowner wanted design principles that maximized energy efficiency, used green building materials and have low maintenance costs. ICFs were a natural choice, given these design characteristics. They were drawn to their energy efficiency, structural stability and relative lower environmental impact.

Debra Coleman, an architect who specializes in passive solar, energy efficient design, designed the home. Wayne Albrecht and Rich Demetrius are building the home.

Phillipston

This is a beautiful 4 bedroom, 4-bath house, complete with an 18x20 great room and a 10x36 sunroom. The homeowner started out looking for the most efficient way to build a passive solar home. The sunroom is using the passive solar concept and the longer south facing wall and openness of the passive solar home. It is not as passive solar as it could be, but the owners believe that with the sunroom, south side and the ICFs, it will be a very efficient home.
