Dayton, Ohio Show Home Most Energy Efficient Ever
The Dayton Area Residential Concrete Promotion Council (DARCPC) partnered with the Dayton Power & Light Company (DP&L), and the Homebuilders Association of Dayton and the Miami Valley (HBA) to build and exhibit a concrete show home in the annual Homearama. The exterior walls of the home were built using insulating concrete forms (ICFs) by I.C.E. Block. DP&L worked with the builder to make the house an Energy Star Home, and as a result, it received a rating of 92.6 on the Home Energy Rating System, making it the most energy efficient home in Ohio. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the monthly energy cost will be only $135 for the three story, 6,800 square foot home.

Radio And Print Ads Promote Open House
DARCPC worked with the HBA, DP&L, and PCA to develop a $12,000 advertising campaign promoting the home and concrete homebuilding. Ads were placed on local radio, in newspapers, and the Homearama program. Over 275 60-second radio spots aired before and during the open house, June 12-28, 1998. PCA's prerecorded radio spots were combined with ads promoting the Homearama to maximize frequency. In addition, there were eight live interviews from the show home during the open house.

During the open house, a display tent for ICF distributors was located across the street from the show home and the PCA exhibit display was located in the garage. DP&L provided a cutaway section in the garage so attendees could see the wall construction in place. Nearly 37,000 people visited the home during the 17-day event.

Tri-State built this concrete spec home to spur interest in concrete
home construction in the area. With their experience
building several other
spec homes, a few modifications in the architectural plan to account
for
thicker walls, some engineering footing modifications, and the addition
of radiant hydronic heat, they were ready to begin. Interest has been
gradual,
and they hope to see it grow.
