This concrete masonry home was awarded the 2004 NECMA Award of Excellence for a Private Residence. The architect was William Kite and the masonry contractor was Silveira's Masonry Construction. This unique home is striking in its appearance, innovative in application and economical in its final reality. The owner desired a new home that would express a passion for architecture and contemporary design, require minimal maintenance, provide abundant natural light and create openness between spaces.

Concrete masonry was used in a variety of applications. The architects developeda scheme that used concrete masonry and precast concrete lintels to form the basis of the design. These elements act as exterior enclosure, load-bearing walls and interior finish. The above-grade wall system is a 16" load-bearing cavity wall consisting of 8" reinforced ground face masonry units on the interior with a 4" veneer of ground face masonry on the exterior. Interior masonry partitions allow for increased sound control between program spaces.

Through a cooperative effort to produce this program with the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), all of the projects entered in the NECMA program were also entered into the NCMA judging. This project was also selected for a national Award of Honor from NCMA, which received more than 80 entries nationwide.
