This residence takes the form of a small Tuscan estate, as evidenced by its campanile, parking court, and detailing. Concrete masonry was selected for its solidity, strength, and compatibility with stucco. The site covers three acres on a north-facing slope overlooking a lake. Placing the primary outdoor activities toward the north gives the residents shelter from the hot summer South Carolina sun. Designed by Christopher Rose Architects, the project includes approximately 16,000 sq. ft. of conditioned space distributed between the main house and an adjacent guest house. There are large outdoor terraces and several outbuildings. In addition to concrete masonry, major structural systems include steel beams and decking, elevated cast-in-place concrete slabs supporting exterior terraces, and open web wood trusses supporting interior floors and roofs. Major finish materials include clay roofing tiles, integral-color stucco, solid mahogany European windows and pre-cast concrete masonry paving units.
