PCA Wins Project Impact Model Corporate Partner Award
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recognized Portland Cement Association for its efforts in promoting disaster-resistant construction through the Project Impact: Building Disaster Resistant Communities initiative. PCA was presented with the Project Impact Model Corporate Partner award during this year’s third annual Project Impact Summit in Washington, D.C.
FEMA Director James Lee Witt presented the award to Lionel Lemay, PCA managing director of market promotion, at the Project Impact Awards Gala Nov. 16, 2000. The Model Corporate Partner award is given to the company or organization that has shown innovation in implementing the Project Impact ideals throughout the U.S.
“The Portland Cement Association and all the recipients of this year’s Project Impact awards are leaders in the Project Impact effort. They are helping to build the infrastructure for disaster prevention in every community in America,” says Witt. “Portland Cement Association’s outstanding efforts demonstrate that we don’t have to be victims of natural disasters. Every one of us can take steps to prevent ourselves, our loved ones, our businesses, and our communities from becoming disaster victims.”
“This award is an exceptional honor for PCA, especially considering the other outstanding nominees,” says Lemay. “PCA and the concrete industry have worked with FEMA for several years to promote disaster-resistant homes, buildings, and dams, and we plan to strengthen our commitment to furthering the Project Impact philosophy through education.”
Most of the association’s efforts have been focused on promoting safe rooms—small concrete storm shelters built within, or as an addition to, a home—through seminars, demonstrations, and media events. PCA encourages its members to donate products and volunteer services to Project Impact communities and has provided training and awareness seminars at events across the country. The association has also installed a permanent display of disaster-resistant construction, including a safe room, at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Md.
Project Impact is a nationwide initiative to change the way America deals with disasters. Since its inception in 1997, nearly 250 communities and 2,500 business partners have embraced the Project Impact ideals, initiating mentoring relationships, private and public partnerships, public outreach, and disaster mitigation projects to reduce damage from potentially devastating disasters.
