Centex ICF Homes on display during 1999 NAHB Show
Centex Homes, in cooperation with the Portland Cement Association (PCA), opened the doors of three concrete homes to attendees of the 1999 National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) Show in Dallas, January 15-18. The homes, built using insulating concrete forms (ICFs) from Owens Corning (1-800-GET-PINK, www.owenscorning.com), are part of a 15-home demonstration project conceived by Centex to determine how concrete homebuilding compares to stick framing.

Centex Homes built several concrete homes in their Vistas of Coppell community in Coppell, Texas. They used insulating concrete forms for the exterior walls.

In addition to a 2,625 square foot furnished model, builders saw two other concrete homes under construction. One of these homes featured a demonstration of concrete pumping during the Show.

The homes are sponsored by PCA, Centex, Owens Corning, Lite-Form International, the Cement Council of Texas, the Insulating Concrete Form Association, Texas Utilities and the Florida Solar Energy Center.

Randy Luther, Centex's Vice President of Research and Development, thoroughly researched ICFs before building the homes. Not only was the technical data favorable but consumer focus groups gave the company reason to think that concrete homes would be a winner. "Homebuyers told us they were willing to spend a little more to get a concrete home," says Luther. "We sold the first two homes right away."
