The Center for Advanced Cement-Based
Materials (ACBM) and the
Portland Cement Association are pleased to announce that the next
Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Workshop will be held June 18-20,
2007, at the PCA headquarters in Skokie, Illinois. The Faculty Workshop
will address the issues of adding and expanding coverage of concrete
materials properties in undergraduate and graduate courses and laboratories.
The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum to introduce the
most
current research in concrete materials properties. Participants
will learn
how to effectively facilitate teaching of concrete, see demonstrations
and
hear explanations on student laboratory experiments, and exchange
information on successful implementation of concrete-related subject
matter into curricula.
UNDERGRADUATE FACULTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM
The Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement Program began in 1992. The
series was established to meet a need which was recognized in a
1987
report titled “Concrete and Durability: A Multi-Billion-Dollar
Opportunity,” published by the National Materials Advisory
Board.
The report indicated the failings of the industry in advancing
the
durability, performance, and service ability of concrete. The report
also
held the university education system accountable for the decline
in
advancement due to the lack of emphasis on cement-based research
in
undergraduate curricula.
This workshop series is designed to bring representatives from
industry, research, and academia together to provide innovative
methods of teaching in laboratories and classrooms as well as to
provide materials for teaching support.
