FOCUS ON TEACHING CONCRETE MATERIALS
PROPERTIES
The ACBM/PCA Undergraduate Faculty Enhancement
Workshop addresses the issues of adding and expanding coverage of
concrete materials properties in undergraduate and graduate courses
and laboratories. The 12th annual workshop was recently held July
11-14, at the PCA headquarters in Skokie, Illinois. Over 35 professors
from colleges and universities across North America attended the
workshop through the support of their local cement and concrete
regional promotion group.
The workshop was designed to bring representatives from industry,
research, and academia together to provide innovative methods of
teaching in laboratories and classrooms as well as to provide materials
for teaching support and exchanging information on successful implementation
of concrete-related subject matter into curricula.
Sessions were taught by experienced faculty: W. Jason Weiss,
Purdue University, David A. Lange, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Kevin J. Folliard,
The University of Texas at Austin, and Michael Thomas,
University of New Brunswick. Topics covered included: Hydration,
Microstructure and Permeability, Supplementary Cementing Materials,
Aggregates, Chemical Admixtures, Concrete Mix Design, Fresh Concrete
Properties, Mechanical Properties of Concrete, Shrinkage and Volume
Stability, Freeze-thaw Durability, and Chloride Resistance &
Corrosion. The workshop also included a tour of Dukane Precast Plant,
Inc., a state-of-the art automated precast facility which produces
precast concrete panels utilizing the unique double-wall process.
If you missed the 2004 ACBM/PCA UFE Workshop, make sure to register
for next year’s workshop to be held in the Summer of 2005
