This 2-day course provides an in-depth discussion of the supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) currently utilized in concrete. In addition to developing the properties of fly ash, slag, silica fume, and other natural pozzolans, this course introduces the benefit of ternary blends and how SCMs can be used in concrete to enhance freeze-thaw durability, improve corrosion and resistance, and control ASR and sulfate attack.
SCMs have an unquestionable influence on the properties of concrete. From improving the workability of fresh concrete to increasing the ultimate strength capacity and durability of hardened concrete, SCMs are an important player in concrete mixtures. Understanding their nature and their effect on the concrete mix will lead to better understanding of concrete from design to placement.
This course covers the essential information necessary for a thorough understanding of SCMs, ternary blends, and the effect of SCMs on concrete.

Who Should Attend
This program is designed for ready-mix concrete personnel who deal with admixture use, SCM and aggregate selection. Admixture, cement, and specialty sales personnel will also find this course useful. Participants should already have attended PCA's "Concrete: Principles and Practices," or an equivalent program, and be familiar with concrete mixture proportioning. This is not a course in concrete mixture proportioning.
