Aggregates and Chemical Admixtures for Use in Concrete
Education & Training Home > Concrete Industry Courses > Aggregates and Chemical Admixtures for Use in Concrete

A complete discussion of two essential concrete components, aggregates and chemical admixtures, is the topic of this newly revised, 2-day course. With the increasing use of high-performance concrete mixtures, understanding how material properties contribute to performance is essential. And the material performance of aggregates and admixtures is no exception. From workability to durability, these two concrete constituents have a tremendous impact on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.

This course will provide the technical knowledge for a greater understanding of both aggregates and chemical admixtures. Focusing on two, vital concrete components, you will learn: how the geology and properties of aggregates contribute to concrete performance, the specifications for ready-mixed concrete with respect to aggregates and admixtures, how lightweight and recycled aggregates may be implemented into your concrete mixtures, how concrete mix designs can be optimized for peak performance, the impact of aggregate durability on concrete properties, how chemical admixtures work and what concrete properties they affect, the basics of air-entraining admixtures, water reducers, and SCC (self-consolidating concrete).

What You Will Cover

  • Aggregate geology and classification
  • specifications for ready-mixed concrete
  • ASTM C33 and CSA A23.1
  • Aggregate optimization and durability
  • Lightweight and recycled by-product aggregates
  • Air-entraining admixtures
  • Water reducers and plasticizers
  • Set modifiers
  • SCC (self-consolidating concrete)
Who Should Attend

This program is designed for ready-mix concrete personnel, contractors, engineers, or architects who have an interest in material selection or specification of concrete mixtures. Construction material suppliers and sales personnel will also find this course useful. Participants should have already attended PCA's "Concrete: Principles and Practices," or an equivalent program, and be familiar with the fundamentals of concrete. This is not a course in concrete mixture proportioning.

There are no classes currently scheduled for this course.

This course can be used for credit toward NRMCA's CCPf designation.
