PCA Literature (Historical)

The Library serves as a repository for all PCA publications, including several thousand discontinued publications dating from the early 1920's. Many of these materials have been digitized and can be emailed to requestors. Others can be photocopied or scanned on request for a nominal fee. For more information on this collection, contact Connie Field, cfield@cement.org.

Image Collection

The PCA Library also includes a vast collection of digital images, slides, photographs, and negatives. The material encompasses all aspects of cement and concrete, including construction methods, landmark structures, cement manufacture, and microscopy.

Our growing collection of digitized images-over 2,000-is searchable through the online Bookstore (www.cement.org/bookstore) and available for immediate download. These may be used for PowerPoint presentations or other purposes.

Higher resolution copies of images (for publications or other purposes) are available for a fee. PCA Members receive discounts.

For more information regarding the image collection, contact Bill Burns, Library Services Information Coordinator, at wburns@cement.org.

Occupational Health & Safety Resource Center

The Library houses a special collection of books and videos acquired through a special program developed by the PCA Occupational Health and Safety Subcommittee. Its purpose is to provide pertinent health- and safety-related information to PCA Members and MTC Associate Members. All materials are available on 3-week loan to Members and to others in the Library. A list of these materials is attached here.

ECCO

The PCA Library houses a special collection of materials on behalf of The Environmental Council of Concrete Organizations (ECCO). The collection, comprising over 2,000 articles, confererence papers, and reports, highlights the environmental benefits of concrete. The collection is searchable through a database on the ECCO web site (www.ecco.org). For more information, contact Connie Field, Manager, PCA Library, at cfield@cement.org.

Mill Session Papers

The Mill Session Papers are a collection of over 900 papers covering all aspects of cement manufacturing presented at PCA meetings from 1920 to the present. They are available to PCA Members only, and are searchable on a database in the Members area of the web site.

Gebhardt Collection

The PCA Library is honored to house the personal collection of Ronald Gebhardt, distinguished cement chemist and former Chair of ASTM's C01 Committee for many years. Mr. Gebhardt died in 2003. His extensive files, which include correspondence, minutes, draft reports, data surveys, and other material provide detailed documentation of the development of ASTM cement-related standards including C150. This collection is stored in the Library Archives and may be used for in-library research.

Historical Cement and Concrete Books

The Library's Archive contains several hundred rare and historical books that document our industry's foundations, as well as early construction methods, concrete houses, and manufacturing processes. They include such titles as Concrete Stone Manufacture (1915), History of the Portland Cement Industry in the United States (1924), A Hundred Years of Portland Cement, 1824-1924 (1924), Manual of Reinforced Concrete and Concrete Block Construction (1908), The Concrete House and Its Construction (1912), Plans for Concrete Houses (1925), and Substance, Form & Color Through Concrete (1924). One of our most famous titles is A Narrative of the Building and a Description of the Construction of the Edystone Lighthouse (1813), with its many handsome and detailed drawings. Although these materials do not circulate, they are available for research at the Library.
