Steel and asphalt prices rose sharply in August, reversing nearly a year of declines from record high levels, according to the Department of Labor’s monthly Producer Price Index (PPI).

Steel prices rose 6.8% from July to August. Asphalt prices increased 2.9%, and lumber was up 1.7% for its third consecutive monthly increase. Concrete prices decreased by 0.7%.

Steel prices are down 36.1% over the record levels of one year ago. Over the same period, asphalt prices decreased 15.6%, lumber prices dropped by 8.1%, and concrete prices increased by 0.6%.

Cement Intensity is defined as a ratio of the amount of cement used per inflation-adjusted expenditures for construction put-in-place. Cement use is measured in metric tons. Nominal construction put-in-place expenditures are adjusted to $1996 real dollars.

While the cement intensity factor positively correlates with promotion activities, given that all other factors remain constant, changes in relative prices for competitive material, changes in the sectoral and geographical distribution of construction, as well as negative effects of the current economic downturn will also affect cement intensity.
