Buffalo Senior High School
Masonry Meets Student and Community Needs for the Future

Students of Buffalo Senior High School take pride in their facility. The 850-seat auditorium and a three court gymnasium are just two of the highlights. The school's functional success comes from a detailed programming effort that involved listening and responding to the community. Academic, athletic, arts, and administrative areas are well balanced and interactive. The heart of the building is a centrally located courtyard that unifies this multi-use facility.

An exterior of brick masonry provides sense of security and permanence. Brick of three different colors and textures was used on the exterior to help reduce the massive appearance of the building and make it feel inviting. A white glazed brick accent band organizes windows and doors and unifies a variety of building shapes.

Natural light plays over diverse interior textures. Wall treatments include burnished concrete block, vinyl fabrics, and textured paint. A new color of block was developed by the manufacturer to give this project a bright and invigorating, yet warm complexion. The block was accented by cast stone providing clear orientation to interior spaces.

The structure is created from concrete block bearing walls, with brick and rock-face block veneer-all constructed using mortar cement mortar. Masonry was selected as a primary building material in response to the project goal of constructing an 80-year building with minimum maintenance requirements.
