Masonry: Material of Choice for a Modern Mission
Masonry Home > Application: Public Buildings > Blessed Sacrament

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Alexandria
By Thomas L. Kerns, FAIA, Principal, Kerns Group Architects, P.C., Washington, DC

Simplicity and economy of means were paramount for the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Alexandria. As the architects for this project, we selected load bearing masonry as a durable and appropriate construction material. We also decided very early to construct the spaces for worship of white split face block and matching white masonry cement mortar. This provides both a color and textural contrast to the red brick administrative areas, reinforcing our concept to distinguish worship from support functions.

All spaces that support these special rooms for worship are subordinate in function-for example; classrooms, offices, a cafeteria, and gymnasium. The support areas are sheathed in two colors of face brick that match an existing brick rectory with a tile roof. The visual contrast of mortar and unit in these areas is muted by the use of colored masonry cement mortars.

The masonry contractor for this project was United Masonry of Alexandria, Virginia. Our coordination of efforts with the mason started with preconstruction meetings and reviewing sample panels of masonry. A cooperative relationship with the mason contractor was enhanced by the excellent workmanship provided and was vital to achieving a landmark complex.

The historical mission / monastery influence evident in this project provides a contemplative retreat from its fast paced suburban Washington, D.C. surroundings. Often times it is the simple ideas we remember. Simple clear concepts gain strength from modest materials in the hands of experienced craftsmen.
