2005 MSJC Masonry Code
Masonry Home > Designers Site> 2005 MSJC Masonry Code

The 2005 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures, Specification for Masonry Structures, and Commentaries are now available in paper or CD versions. Information in the code has been substantially revised to keep pace with new technology. Several sections have been updated since the previous edition and new topics are included as well.

Major Updates to the 2005 MSJC Masonry Code

  • Strength design procedures for Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) Masonry. (Appendix A) This is a new topic for the code. AAC units are lightweight, insulating units.
  • Complete revision in Prestressed Masonry design philosophy to a strength design basis with service load checks.
  • Revised maximum reinforcement limits for Strength Design.
  • Harmonized splice length requirements for Allowable-stress Design and Strength Design
  • Clarification on limits for empirical design in areas with high wind.

Responsible Organizations

The Masonry Code is a consensus design standard developed by the Masonry Standards Joint Committee, or MSJC. This is a joint committee of three organizations: The Masonry Society (TMS), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Building Code Requirements for Masonry StructuresEach assigns its own code number to the documents, which are the building code and specification with commentaries. Hence the designations Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-05/ASCE 5-05/ TMS 402-05), Specification for Masonry Structure (ACI 530.1-05/ASCE 6-05/ TMS 602-05), Commentary on Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-05/ASCE 5-05/ TMS 402-05), and Commentary on Specification for Masonry Structures (ACI 530.1-05/ASCE 6-05/ TMS 602-05).
