Masonry Standards Joint Committee Prepares to Enter New Code Cycle

Building codes, and the documents that support them, are continually being revised. This ongoing work allows for technology transfer on a timely basis. In this way, codes remain efficient and effective so that new structures are built to the best available technology. It also ensures safe buildings, important to designers and builders responsible for getting them constructed and to the public who uses the buildings.

The Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) publishes the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures and Specification for Masonry Structures and related commentaries, upon which masonry codes are based. MSJC is currently addressing public comments for the 2005-2008 cycle that will result in a 2008 document. Even as it puts the final touches on the current version, the committee is readying itself for the next cycle, which will run from 2008-2011.

Dr. Richard Klingner of University of Texas at Austin is finishing his term as chair of the MSJC and Diane Throop, Consultant (Ohio) is preparing to step in as new chair. As one cycle ends and another begins, committees are disbanded and reformed. Many members return but new members are sought. Interested parties with technical expertise in masonry—manufacture, design, and construction—are encouraged to join subcommittees, where much of the work gets accomplished.

A list of subcommittees of MSJC follows:

  • Executive Subcommittee

  • AAC Masonry

  • Construction Requirements

  • Flexure & Axial Load

  • General

  • Infills

  • Prestressed Masonry

  • Reinforcement & Connectors
