Cement Industry Honors Titan America Cement Plant for Land Stewardship, Outreach

SKOKIE, Ill. – The Portland Cement Association (PCA) acknowledged the Titan America LLC/Florida Cement and Aggregates cement plant in Medley, Florida, as part of the 2015 Cement Industry Energy & Environmental Awards honoring sustainable manufacturing practices. The plant was a runner-up in both the Land Stewardship and Outreach categories.

The plant highlighted it works on the Pennsuco Pit BC Littoral Shelf, which was previously used for mining activities in conjunction with the facility’s operation. Pit BC is a success story to promote restoration in other mining areas. Undertaking habitat enhancement projects at a corporate facility adds ecological and functional value to both the immediate area and the entire ecosystem. This project demonstrates Titan’s commitment to restoration and environmental connectivity.

Titan America has several employees at its Pennsuco complex dedicated to environmental enhancement and protection. Titan America also enlists the help of other professionals with specialized biological and environmental backgrounds to aid in habitat assessment and management. The use of both employees and environmental professionals ensures that the company is able to attain responsible environmental goals that are both beneficial to wildlife and company interests.

The Energy & Environmental Awards honor individual cement facilities that exemplify the spirit of continuous environmental improvement and support this spirit with action.  These plants go beyond government regulations and local laws to ensure that their processes contribute to making their communities better places to live and work.  Five categories are recognized:  outreach, environmental performance, land stewardship, innovation and energy efficiency.  Additionally, PCA presents a special honor to a plant demonstrating excellence in multiple categories.

PCA created the award program in 2000 as part of its environment and energy strategic plan for the U.S. cement industry. The awards honor activities conducted during the previous calendar year, and the program is open to any cement manufacturing plant in North America. Judges for the 2015 awards Program included representatives from U.S. EPA-ENERGY STAR, U.S. Geological Survey, National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association, and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association.
