PCA Recognizes Cement Facilities’ Safety Records

SKOKIE, Ill.- The Portland Cement Association (PCA) recognized twelve cement plants with the Chairman’s Safety Performance Awards for outstanding safety records at PCA’s Spring Meeting in Chicago.

PCA honored plants in three categories designated by the number of hours employees collectively worked in 2014 for achieving superior safety records. 

The plants were:

  • Lehigh Hanson Inc., Bellingham, Washington, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • Lafarge North America Inc., Seattle, Washington, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • Lafarge North America Inc., Whitehall, Pennsylvania, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • Buzzi Unicem USA, Inc., Maryneal, Texas, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • CEMEX USA, Demopolis, Alabama, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • Lafarge North America Inc., Buffalo, Iowa, less than 200,000 employee hours
  • Suwannee American Cement LCC/VCNA, Branford, Florida, 201,000-269,000 employee hours
  • CEMEX USA, Odessa, Texas, 201,000-269,000 employee hours
  • Ash Grove Cement Company, Louisville, Nebraska, 201,000-269,000 employee hours
  • Lafarge North America Inc., Alpena, Michigan, greater than 270,000 employee hours 
  • Lehigh Hanson Inc., Union Bridge, Maryland, greater than 270,000 employee hours 
  • Texas-Lehigh Cement Company, Buda, Texas, greater than 270,000 employee hours 

This year the records of 100 portland cement plants in the United States and Canada were reviewed to determine which ones achieved the best safety records. Several of these plants had no accidents in 2014, and all the plants excelled in preventing accidents.
