People throughout Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and Louisiana
are now beginning the enormous process of putting back together
their lives and reconstructing or repairing their homes. Some
have chosen to start over away from the Gulf Coast, but many
are staying to rebuild their homes and communities into stronger,
better places.
Key to prevention of future devastating home loss will be
the quick adoption of local and state building codes that
improve life safety, property protection, and the general
welfare of the public. Experts recommend the approval of minimal
statewide codes equal to International Code Council’s
building and residential codes or other codes that reference
the American Society of Civil Engineers’ “Flood
Resistant Design and Construction” and “Minimum
Design Load” standards. |
