PCA Announces Sixth Edition of Masonry Handbook

SKOKIE, Ill.—Since the first concrete block was molded more than 125 years ago, concrete masonry has been a staple of the construction industry.   During the years innovations have solidified its place as one of the most durable, versatile, and economical building materials available today.

The Portland Cement Association’s sixth edition of the Concrete Masonry Handbook for Architects, Engineers, Builders highlights recent advancements in concrete masonry, enabling the design and construction of state-of-the-art residential, commercial, and industrial structures.

The manual reflects the most common practices for concrete masonry construction, from the latest ASTM reference standards to innovations in materials and methods. The new edition places a major emphasis on the provisions of relevant codes including the 2006 International Building Code and the 2005 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures, published by the Masonry Standards Joint Committee.

The Concrete Masonry Handbook provides comprehensive coverage of materials—from units, to mortar, to grout. Relevant research and technical publications, including the National Concrete Masonry Association TEK series, are extensively referenced, offering both a thorough understanding of various topics and a key resource for deeper study.

An appendix offers more than 40 details of masonry sections and contains a new glossary that will be a useful tool to anyone working in masonry design or construction.  More than 200 color photos describe designing and building with concrete masonry, providing an excellent teaching text.

At more than 300 pages, the sixth edition expands on the knowledge of a long-standing favorite.
