Cement and Concrete Reference Guide

Portland cement, the basic ingredient of concrete, is not a brand name. It is a type of hydraulic cement, just as "stainless" is a type of steel and "sterling" is a type of silver. In the United States and Canada it is manufactured to rigid specifications governing chemical and physical properties.

The Portland Cement Association has designed this section to help members of the media and the general public understand the basics of cement and concrete. It provides general background information as well as links to various sites throughout the PCA Web site for more detailed information.

If you have any questions regarding the materials in this section, or need information that is not provides, contact us at newsroom@cement.org.
