Overview
A variety of cement-based products can be used in pavement applications.
They are all similar, in that they all contain the components
of portland cement, aggregates and soils, and water.
However, the aggregate component is not strictly limited to sand
and crushed stone or gravel. Other “aggregates” used
in pavement applications may consist of both the fine and granular
portions of soil, as well as fly-ash and slag, and even failed bituminous
surfaces such as Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP).
By varying the proportions of the three basic ingredients, along with
how they are mixed and placed, we can develop pavement materials that
are plastic and malleable when newly mixed, yet strong and durable
when hardened. While ready mixed concrete (RMC) forms the basis of
conventional portland ccement concrete pavements, there are other
cement-based products that defy the label of “concrete,”
yet share many of its qualities.
