Tom Chizmadia, Holcim (US) Inc., Sustainable Development, U.S.
About PCA>Promotion Progress Awards>Chizmadia

An avid and visionary proponent of sustainability for both Holcim and the cement industry, Tom has been integrally involved in numerous activities. He served on
Holcim's first global CO2 task force, providing constructive views on the strengths and weaknesses of the American and European climate change policies and helping to develop Holcim's global CO2 objective.

Tom led Holcim (US) to become one of the founding members of the US EPA Climate Leaders program and has served as the Holcim (US) representative on the Business Environmental Leadership Committee of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change since 1998. Additionally, Tom worked with the White House Climate Change Task Force during the Clinton Administration to achieve lower CO2 cement.

As chairman of PCA’s Environment and Energy Committee, Tom helped develop industry targets for CO2 and CKD reductions. He also assisted in defining PCA’s sustainability initiative goals and securing higher funding for the project. For more than a decade, Tom has been involved with the Cement Kiln Recycling Coalition (CKRC), continuously assisting in the promotion of energy recovery in cement kilns.

Tom’s energetic environmental and energy advocacy has resulted in impressive results, including the establishment of an active comprehensive advisory committee (CAC) at nearly 80% of Holcim (US), with several CACs operating successfully for nearly 10 years. Industry targets for CO2 and CKD reduction have been approved and publicly announced, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions per ton of product by 10% between 1990 and 2020. Plus, the comprehensive SD Communication Program 2004 – 2006 was completed in November 2003 by Fleishman-Hillard and WirthlinWorldWide, thanks in large part to the background information, guidance, and oversight Tom provided.
