Chairman Jim Repman (California Portland Cement) and PCA's Mark
Justman present a 2005 Promotion Progress Award to Bill Larson(center). |
Under
the leadership of Bill and the Market Development Team, CEMEX held
the first Sustainable Development and Construction Workshop in 2005.
The workshop attracted many elected officials, agency engineers, developers,
and contractors to discuss key issues affecting the use of cement
and concrete in Southern California. Among others, these included
the dwindling aggregate supply and need for recycling, CO2 and NOX
reduction in the cement manufacturing process through use of alternative
fuel sources, sustainable development, the use of soil cement for
bank protection, and the economic, environmental, and acoustic benefits
of ICF construction.
California Deputy Secretary of Transportation
John Barna was the workshop’s keynote speaker. Impressed and
convinced by the compelling evidence regarding the use of concrete
and cement as solutions to economic and even more importantly, environmental,
issues, Mr. Barna pledged to involve the industry in discussions
with the state government regarding future aggregate and plant development
to accommodate the high demand economists forecast for California.
