Flow with Show: SCC Offers New Opportunities for Architectural Concrete

Concrete is well known for its many benefits like availability, placeability, and durability. Appreciation for its aesthetic qualities continues to grow. Whether smooth or textured, gray, white, or colored, concrete surfaces have unlimited aesthetic potential. Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) is not only compatible with the wide variety of forming techniques and finishes, it’s often an easier way to achieve the desired surface. This article describes the basics of SCC and examines some of the technology behind the material, from the effect gray and white cement chemistry has on mix design to the new ASTM test methods used to assess the fresh properties. Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory Wins Supercomputer Time

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Md. have been awarded more than 1,000,000 hours of NASA supercomputer time to study concrete mixing. The VCCTL (Virtual Cement and Concrete Testing Laboratory) team will use the time to study the complex interactions of cement and aggregate particles of fresh concrete in order to better understand concrete rheology.   ...FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Portland cement

Q: What are Type I/II or Type II/V cements?

A: A Type II/V cement designation simply means that the cement complies with the requirements of ASTM C 150, Standard Specification for Portland Cement, for both Type II and Type V cements. It is quite common to find cements that comply with multiple cement designations such as Type I/II and Type II/V.

  ...DURABILITY

Acid Resistance

In general, portland cement concrete does not have good resistance to acids. Some weak acids however can be tolerated, particularly if the exposure is occasional. There are essentially three ways to improve concrete resistance to acids, (1) choosing the right concrete composition to make it as impermeable as possible, (2) isolating it from the environment by using a suitable coating or (3) modifying the environment to make it less aggressive to the concrete.
