Indianapolis Automated People Mover
Indianapolis, Indiana
Transit Home > Indianapolis Automated People Mover

This unique project may change the transit outlook for typical American cities. For the first time in recent history, a privately funded transit project entirely on a public right-of-way is being rapidly built in the downtown area of Indianapolis based on a long-term franchise agreement with the Mayor’s office: a public system at no cost to taxpayers.

As the infrastructure typically accounts for a majority of the system costs, under the private funding scenario, there was a need to design and build a new kind of concrete guideway to meet the new requirements of high aesthetics and performance at a lower cost in comparison to other guideways built to date. The resulting guideway is slim, simple, and elegant.

Jakes Associates, Inc. has conceived the project and has assisted its client, Clarian Health (a medical conglomerate and major employer in the City of Indianapolis) to develop and manage the project. SDI, general contractor and technology provider for this project, has designed the guideway which met the project criteria established by Jakes Associates, Inc.

The Indianapolis project is a demonstration of how easily it is to implement innovative, elevated guideway People Mover systems in the most typical American urban environment in comparison to all other guideway and rail transit modes. Since the first concrete pour on May 24, 2001, all eighty-seven foundations and eighty-five columns, as well as the 11th Street lane widening have been completed. Superstructure installation is now in progress: eighty-two straight beams and sixty-three curved beams have been cast. Twenty-seven beams have been erected on Senate Avenue. The erection of horizontal beams, three fully enclosed stations and overhead walkways is in progress.

The construction activities have proceeded without any complaints from neighborhoods, adjacent historic districts, businesses, schools, or authorities. A benefit of the slim and light guideway design, and smart erection techniques. The total cost of the project is expected to be $40 million.
