Seminar & Tour Objective:
The seminar will present information on the principles of solidification/stabilization
(S/S) treatment technology, and its design and application for remediation
of contaminated property.
S/S treatment involves mixing a binding reagent into the contaminated
environmental media or waste. The technology protects human health
and the environment by immobilizing hazardous constituents within
the treated material. Treatment can be accomplished on excavated
material (exsitu treatment) or on contaminated material while it
remains in-place (insitu treatment) S/S has been selected for 23%
of the EPA Superfund source control projects.
The tour will be of the Brunswick Wood Superfund Site in Brunswick,
Ga. The remedy for this former location of a commercial wood preserving
facility includes S/S treatment. Over 60,000 cubic yards (46,000
cubic meters) of wood preservative-impacted soil and sediment will
be treated. Three major types of wood preservatives were used in
wood preserving operations at the Site: creosote and other polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pentachlorophenol (PCP) and associated
dioxin, and chromated copper arsenate (CCA). Tour participants will
be able to observe exsitu S/S treatment of the impacted soil and
sediment.

Who Should Attend:
This workshop is being organized for consulting environmental professionals,
remediation contractors, federal, state, and municipal regulators,
academics, site owners, and other professionals who are interested
in learning about the use of S/S treatment as a remediation method
for contaminated properties including brownfields.
