Waste Treatment Home > Superfund Sites > PCB-Contaminated Soils

PCB-contaminated surface soils removed at Yellow Water Road site.
Improper management of transformers and capacitors led to contamination of soil with PCBs and subsequent remediation at Yellow Water Road Superfund site in Baldwin, Florida. EPA Region IV conducted a remedial action at the site.
Pugmill used for ex-situ treatment of soils at the Yellow Water Road site.
Site area soil with PCB contamination above 10mg/kg was excavated and stored on-site. In all, 3,420 m3 (4,470 cu yd) of contaminated soil with PCB concentrations up to 660 mg/kg was readied for treatment. The EPA-selected remedy included cement-based S/S. A pugmill was used to mix the soil with portland cement. The treated soil was incorporated into a dedicated landfill (monofill) constructed at the site.
