PCA Congratulates 2017 EPA ENERGY STAR® Certified Cement Manufacturing Plants & CalPortland Company for 2018 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award

April 6, 2018 -- The Portland Cement Association (PCA) would like to congratulate the 25 cement plants that received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR certification for their superior energy performance in 2017, as well as CalPortland Company for earning the 2018 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award.

Cement plants represented more than a quarter – or 26 percent – of all manufacturing plants recognized by EPA for energy performance in 2017. CalPortland’s 2018 award is the company’s 14th recognition under the ENERGY STAR program.

“America’s cement producers have a strong culture of innovation that has led to gains in energy efficiency and new sustainable manufacturing practices that continually reduce environmental impacts,” said PCA President and CEO Mike Ireland.  “The cement manufacturing sector’s leadership in this program is evidence of that culture. And CalPortland’s incredible track record for partnering with ENERGY STAR is to be commended.”

ENERGY STAR provides industry-specific energy benchmarking tools and other resources for 17 different types of manufacturing plants: auto, baking, cement, corn refining, food processing, glass manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and petroleum refining.

“Earning ENERGY STAR certification is a real mark of excellence, highlighting companies that are leaders in cutting energy costs and reducing waste,” said EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Bill Wehrum in the agency’s announcement.  “This program is in direct line with the administration’s priorities to support American manufacturing – greater efficiency fosters industrial development, greater competitiveness, a strong economy and a healthy environment.”
