Doctoral Student, University of Texas at Arlington

2024 Recipient

Ishrat Baki Borno is a doctoral student in the civil engineering department at the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Along with her professor, Warda Ashraf, she submitted a proposal for a 2024 Fellowship “Co-calcination of Clay to Produce Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs)” focused on potential processing methods to improve widely available, lower grade clays into viable supplementary cementitious materials.

Ms. Borno’s broader research efforts focus on the development of sustainable cementitious materials from calcined clay, geopolymer, and alkali-activated materials. Ms. Borno works on projects sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). She has authored 7 peer-reviewed research articles in esteemed journals and presented results of her research at American Concrete Institute (ACI) conventions. Additionally, she serves as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals published by Elsevier and the American Society of Civil Engineers. Moreover, she is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI). In 2023, she received an outstanding graduate student award from the University of Texas at Arlington’s Department of Civil Engineering, and a travel grant from ACI to attend its 2024 Spring Convention. She also received third place in student poster competition in 14th Advances in Cement-based Materials, Missouri S&T, Rolla, Missouri and ACI 123: student poster contest, ACI Spring Convention, Toronto, Canada, 2025.
